A summit of Malay NGOs will be held on Sept 19 in Kuala Lumpur to determine whether they should continue supporting the government.

The organiser, Yayasan Ayahanda Semalaysia (YAS) executive chairperson Syed Husain Al-Shahab, said there are a few bad eggs in Umno who need to quit the party.

"The name of Umno is still relevant to the Malays, [...] but there are two or three bad eggs, and those who know they are bad eggs should quit.

"The ugly should go put some makeup on, and the sick should go to the hospital," he told reporters at a press conference in Kampung Baru, Kuala Lumpur today.

He said this when asked to comment on the relevance of Umno in today's political climate.

Syed Hussain added Umno needed more professionals in their ranks especially in the grassroots, just like Pakatan.

"Pakatan has intelligent people, lawyers, engineers, why aren't they in Umno? If they are in Umno, the party would be great by now," he said.

Meanwhile, besides determining whether it should continue supporting the government, Syed Husain said the Sept 19 summit, also seeks to consolidate over 100 Pekida splinter groups and over 3,000 leaders or ‘Ayahandas’ into one united force.

"The summit aims to get feedback and decide on the way forward for these NGOs," he said.

According to Syed Husain, Malay NGOs had become fractured after the effects of the 1998 Umno split, spilled over into the group. 

Since then he said, some ‘Ayahandas’ have become extreme, going into gangsterism or anti-government groups, while some have become too egotistical to work with.
