Malaysians have increasingly turned to prayer in recent weeks amid scandals plaguing the nation and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is no exception.
Malaysians have increasingly turned to prayer in recent weeks amid scandals plaguing the nation and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak is no exception.
Najib will be hosting a prayer session at the prime minister’s residence in Putrajaya tonight to ‘save Malaysia’ as the country is facing a political crisis and uncertain economic times.
The function, which started at at 6.30pm, will be attended by all Umno division leaders, according to mStar .
When contacted, Rizal Mansor, an aide with the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), confirmed the prayer function.
He added the such prayers were a routine for the prime minister when he has free time.
“The prime minister often conducts prayers (doa selamat), it is not unusual.
“It is just done at the surau, nothing grand,” he told Malaysiakini .
The function has also led to speculation that a discussion will be held between Najib and his deputy Ahmad Zahid Hamidi there.
However, the meeting was played down by Ampang Umno division chief Ismail Kijo ( photo ).
“I think the function is not a suitable place to discuss issues affecting the party and nation.
“The function is more for praying for the well-being of the country and party,” he was quoted as saying by mStar .
Earlier today, PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli also announced that he will be holding special prayers tomorrow as the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) comes under pressure for its investigation into the RM2.6 billion deposited into Najib’s personal bank accounts.
He had also urged other MPs to do likewise ahead of the Bersih 4 rally on Aug 29 and 30 to support MACC.
Earlier this month, the MACC, too, held its own prayers, asking for divine direction .
MACC investigators probing the deposits into Najib’s personal accounts have faced arrests by police and their homes and offices raided.
The case’s lead investigator was also abruptly transferred out, but was subsequently restored after a public outcry.
