14 online abuse cases taken to court, says MCMC
Fourteen cases involving various offences have been taken to court under Section 211 and Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 from January to August.
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Monitoring and Enforcement Division chief Zulkarnain Mohd Yasin said most of the cases involved abuse of social media such as Facebook, Twitter, short-messaging service (SMS), multimedia messaging (MMS), and blogs.
He said other offences committed among others consisted of sending offensive contents that intended to offend a person, uploading and sending pornographic contents through e-mail and social media.
"Of the total, 10 cases have been settled in court, while four cases are still pending," he said in a statement in Kuala Lumpur today.
