PAS recruits ex-state rep who quit DAP

PAS has recruited former Bercham state assemblyperson Sum Cheok Leng, who resigned from DAP last night.

Sum handed his membership form to Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria at the state PAS headquarters this morning, according to Utusan Malaysia .

Sum said he had also submitted his resignation from DAP to the party headquarters last night.

The one-term Bercham state assemblyperson from 2008 to 2013 will join the PAS Supporters' Congress, which is the non-Muslim wing of the Islamic party.

He said this will be a new platform for him to serve the rakyat.

The recruitment is a coup for PAS against its ally-turned-enemy DAP.

PAS has blamed DAP for funding Gerakan Harapan Baru, a PAS splinter group that is planning to set up a new political party.

Harapan Baru comprises PAS progressive leaders who were ousted from the PAS leadership in the June party polls by the conservative faction.

The new conservative leadership has taken a tougher stance against its former Pakatan Rakyat partners, including severing ties with DAP.

Prior to that, DAP had severed its relationship with PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

Harapan Baru is planning to replace PAS in a new opposition coalition.
