Semporna Youth wants Umno polls next year
Semporna Umno Youth is set to demand that the 18-month postponement of the Umno election be rescinded and party polls be reinstated as scheduled next year.
Semporna Umno Youth is set to demand that the 18-month postponement of the Umno election be rescinded and party polls be reinstated as scheduled next year.
This is among three motions expected to be tabled at the division's Youth wing annual general assembly (AGM) this evening which is bound to be controversial for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
At present, with the postponement of the Umno polls, Najib is expected to stay on as Umno president until 2018 when the next general election is due.
On June 26, Najib announced the postponement of the Umno polls, which was the unanimous decision of the supreme council.
The other two motions by Semporna Umno called for Najib to go on leave and for the 1MDB issue to be dealt with in a transparent manner.
In the motion on the 1MDB issue, it claimed the matter was affecting Umno's image which could cause the party to lose in the next general election.
Semporna Umno Youth is led by Aziz Jamman.
Sentiment is strong
According to a source within Semporna Umno Youth, a similar motion asking for the party polls to be held next year was also put forth by the Wanita wing yesterday.
"The motion by (Semporna) Umno Youth may also be passed by the division's main body tomorrow as the sentiment for it is strong," he said.
The wing's annual general assembly would be officiated by national Umno Youth vice-chief Khairul Azwan Harun.
Semporna Umno's main AGM would take place tomorrow.
Semporna Umno is led by Mohd Shafie Apdal, who was dropped as rural and regional development minister by Najib for his criticism on 1MDB.
In the cabinet reshuffle, Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin was also dropped as deputy prime minister for his criticism of Najib's handling of 1MDB.
Muhyiddin had also revealed he confronted Najib about the RM2.6 billion deposited into the latter's personal bank accounts prior to being removed from the government.
Semporna Umno had since withdrawn its invitation for Najib to officiate the division's AGM due to security concerns.
The division had instead invited Muhyiddin to take Najib's place. Muhyiddin is slated to arrive at Tawau airport at 10.30am tomorrow.
