The opposition leader in the Malacca state assembly is upset over the rejection of her motion to question the chief minister's inaction on money politics in the state and the position of a suspended Umno member who still serves in the state executive council.

"I will fight against the decision to reject - without any reason - my motion and questions, when the assembly reconvenes on Oct 23," said Betty Chew, who is also DAP Malacca women's chief, in a statement today.

Her motion was rejected in a letter dated Oct 14 by state assembly speaker Mo'min Abd Aziz under standing order 17(2). No direct reason was given, beyond the speaker saying that the assembly supported the prime minster's move to fight corruption.

"My question on the position of state exco member Amid Nordin, who has been suspended from Umno for three years, was rejected under standing order 13(4) which is unacceptable because it was not a baseless motion," said Chew, who is the Kota Laksamana state assemblyperson.

Amid - who is currently in charge of tourism and culture - was accused of money politics during the Umno Kota Melaka divisional polls last July where he defeated former Malacca chief minister Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik.

CM is afraid

Chew claimed it was clear that Chief Minister Mohd Ali Rustam was afraid of the issues she raised as he did not know how to respond.

"To reject my questions and motions does not only show his weakness and fear to face the issue but also his lack of commitment to support the prime minister's move for a clean, trustworthy and efficient administration," she said.

She also urged Mohd Ali to make public the steps he plans to undertake to fight money politics especially in the light of allegations of it influencing Umno's recent party elections, where the chief minister won a vice-president's post.

She also touched on the issue of 84 Datuk titles being conferred in Malacca, which is extraordinarily high. There have been claims that the titles were political gifts from Mohd Ali to those who helped him win.

"His denial to the accusations is hard to believe as many of those who received the title have not contributed to the citizens and the state," she added.

Chew said the people deserved a leader who was not only corrupt-free but also with high integrity and accountability.
