'Using cops to stop no confidence vote an abuse'

The deputy prime minister's use of the police force to quash a no confidence vote against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak would be an abuse of power, Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar says.

Mahfuz said this in reference to Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also home minister, labelling the bid to get sufficient MPs to remove Najib as "a plot to topple the government " and asking the police to investigate.

"It is something truly strange and distasteful that the question of a no confidence vote has been handed to the police.

"It is an abuse of power if the police stop a no confidence vote against Najib as prime minister.

"A no confidence vote is a democratic process allowed by the Federal Constitution and the law," Mahfuz said in a statement today.

He also warned that the police would be breaking the law if they complied with Zahid's instructions.

"I urge Zahid and inspector-general of police (IGP) Khalid Abu Bakar to cease violating the constitution and ghe country's laws by using the police to intimidate MPs," Mahfuz said.
