It is up to the prime minister whether cabinet should declare their assets to the public, said Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamad.

"We'll leave it to the prime minister to discuss.

"This is not under my purview," he said when met by reporters in Putrajaya today.

Pressed further on what his opinion was, the former Public Accounts Committee (PAC) chief declined to comment.

"Later, later [...] you guys will take it (my comment) and spin it later on," he said before rushing off.

Nur Jazlan ( photo ) was met after handing citizenship certificates to stateless Indians under the MyDaftar programme.

Health Minister Dr S Subramaniam, who was also present, was more positive about asset declarations when quizzed at a press conference after the event.

"That's okay. That's a good call. Of course I don't have much assets to declare anyway; not a problem‎," he said.

Plans to regulate political funding

Getting cabinet to declare their assets has been an ongoing effort by the opposition since at least 2004.

Most recently, PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli ( photo ) on Tuesday said the opposition might boycott Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's plans to regulate political funding unless he and his ministers made their assets public knowledge.

Najib's call for regulation on political funding comes as he himself is under heavy fire for receiving a RM2.6 billion donation into his personal account.

Besides Rafizi's call, DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has also asked the cabinet to disclose whether it had received a share of the RM2.6 billion.

So far only Foreign Affairs Minister Anifah Aman has denied the claim.
