Linda Onn, Suria FM ordered to pay RM50k to mag owner

The High Court in Shah Alam today ordered a Suria FM announcer and the radio station to pay RM50,000 to the owner of Ujang , a humour magazine, for defaming him.

Justice See Mee Chun further ordered Linda Onn (Rozlinda Onn) and Rimakmur Sdn Bhd which owned Suria FM to pay RM20,000 costs to Othman Yusof and MOY Publications Sdn Bhd.

The judge made the ruling in chambers during which the plaintiffs were represented by lawyer C Vignesh Kumar while the defendants were represented by Bhag Singh.

Vignesh Kumar told reporters that the court also ordered the defendants to pay five percent interest on the sum effective from the date on which the defamatory remarks were made till disposal of the case today.

He said the court further issued an order restraining the defendants or their agents from further making defamatory remarks whether orally or written, about the plaintiffs.

In June, 2014, the plaintiffs filed the lawsuit alleging that Linda Onn made the defamatory remarks while presenting a segment, ‘Carta 30 Lagu Top Mingguan’ at around 1.30pm on Jan 25, 2014.

The plaintiffs alleged that during the segment, Linda Onn was asked by a listener of the radio station about the magazine and gave an answer which was baseless, untrue and had demeaned them.

The plaintiffs alleged that a repeat of the segment was aired on Jan 26 the same year at around 6.30pm by the same radio station.

They further alleged that the defendants did not verify with them prior to giving the answer and after knowing that it was defamatory in nature, did not take any steps to rectify it.
