The DAP has produced a video compact disc (VCD) recording the events which led to the suspension of its chairperson Karpal Singh from Parliament and becoming the 'MP-in-exile' .

The VCD is a compilation of the proceeding in Parliament on Sept 7, which debated and passed a motion to suspend Karpal, the MP for Bukit Gelugor, for six months after he refused to tender an apology to the House.

It features how Karpal, a prominent criminal lawyer, defended himself and the war-of-words between him and other Barisan Nasional parliamentarians.

According to Penang DAP chairperson Chow Kon Yeow, the disc was produced by the DAP's information and technology bureau and is on sale at RM10 each.

He appealed to party members and supporters to support the sale of the VCD as it is part of the 'sympathy, support and solidarity for Karpal' campaign which is now actively being carried out in Karpal's constituency of Bukit Gelugor.

International concerns

On the party's plan to bring Karpal's plight to the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Chow said the IPU has been informed of the matter earlier this month but has requested for more information before making any official stand over the suspension.

He noted that the Socialist International (SI) Asia-Pacific has expressed its solidarity to Karpal in a meeting held early this month.

Karpal was suspended for misleading Parliament by questioning the oath-taking of MPs who failed to raise their hands while being sworn in on May 17.

The parliamentary privileges committee tasked to hold an inquiry into Karpal's case has recommended two actions against the MP - apologise within 10 days or a six-month suspension should he failed to tender an apology.

After the senior politician chose not to apologise, he was slapped with the suspension and forfeited his MP's monthly allowances and other perks during this period.

Although many quarters have expressed their support for Karpal, there were also voters in Bukit Gelugor who publicly stated that the MP should have apologised for the sake of his constituents.
