Gerakan Harapan Baru (GHB) pro-tem committee chief Mohamad Sabu, better known as Mat Sabu, is confident that there will be PAS members joining the mammoth Bersih 4 rally this weekend regardless of the party's non-particpation.

"I am confident that PAS members will still join in the rally," he said at a press conference in Shah Alam today.

Mat Sabu ( photo ) declined to comment on PAS' stand to not participate in the rally, merely saying that he will not speak for another party and that PAS should be the one to explain their decision.

PAS has said that it will not be mobilising its members and supporters to attend the rally as it is focusing on preparing for its People's Congress on Sept 12.

"The party will commit its resources and mobilise its organisation fully on Sept 12," PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan was reported as saying.

He also claimed the date of the Bersih 4 rally, being one day before Merdeka Day celebrations, was not suitable.

Previously, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had also confirmed the party would not be participating in the Bersih 4 rally though it will not stop members from attending.

GHB fully supports

The Bersih 4 rally which is organised by electoral watchdog Bersih will be held in three cities this weekend.

They are demanding for free and fair elections and a clean government. They are also calling for the right to protest, the strengthening of parliamentary democracy and to save the Malaysian economy.

Mat Sabu said GHB fully supports the rally and will be sending 500 volunteers from their Arif unit to help facilitate the event similar to what DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) and Angkatan Muda Keadilan (AMK) have pledged.
