After the spotlight fell on Merbok Umno over one of its delegate's scathing speech against Najib Abdul Razak, there is confusion now on whether the division actually endorsed the prime minister or demanded that he step down.

The scathing speech about Najib handling's of 1MDB and the deposits of RM2.6 billion into his personal bank accounts was delivered by Kampung Sungai Sin Umno branch chief Abd Karim Ali at the Merbok Umno annual general meeting last week.

Abd Karim said the speech was to debate a motion demanding for Najib's resignation.

However, Merbok Umno chairperson Tajul Urus Mat Zin said there was never a motion asking Najib ( photo ) to resign and the issue was only raised by Abd Karim during the debates.

Furthermore, Tajul Urus said the opposite happened - that Umno Merbok was mooting a motion to endorse Najib's leadership and Abd Karim was the sole dissenting debater who raised Najib's resignation.

Motion unanimously passed

Speaking to Malaysiakini today, Abd Karim insisted that the motion was to demand for Najib's resignation and not the opposite.

He said the motion was also unanimously passed with amendments.

"The motion asking for the Umno president to resign was the motion debated and unanimously approved with amendments by delegates at the annual general meeting," he said.

He also accused his division chief of trying to sidetrack from the main issue.

"The Merbok Umno division chief was either mistaken or trying to sidetrack from the real issue," Abd Karim said.

Tajul, when contacted by Malaysiakini , insisted that Abd Karim was wrong.

"After he (Abd Karim) spoke, he sat down and the debate was continued by one Major Anwar Abd Hamid.

"There was no motion or voting done as he claimed," he said.

He added that there were only two amendments to the motion, namely on the goods and services tax and the calling for a royal commission of inquiry into 1MDB.
