Maria urges photo stomp duo to co-operate with cops
Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah today urged the duo who stomped on a picture of PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang and Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak during the Bersih 4 rally to co-operate with police investigations.
"We ask the two individuals who stomped on the picture to present themselves at the police station and let police investigate.
"If they dared to do it, then they should be brave enough to take responsibility for it," she told reporters, after being questioned by police at the Bukit Aman police headquarters.
PAS members have lodged multiple police reports on the matter and demanded that Bersih apologise.
However, Maria said while Bersih regrets the incident, it will not apologise.
"We regret the act. 600,000 people attended the rally in high spirits and we could not control them all," she said.
"They all came with a lot of emotions and we regret what they did," she said.
In 2012, a 19-year-old youth photographed stomping on a picture of Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor during Independence Day celebrations in Kuala Lumpur was handcuffed and arrested when she presented herself to the police station.
She was investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948 and apologised over the stomping incident.
The 34-hour Bersih 4 rally last weekend had several demands including transparent government, clean and fair elections and Najib's resignation.
