The government warned Malaysians to avoid southern Thailand, citing instability after deadly clashes between the military and Muslim protesters.

"We see the area as not peaceful and unstable. Malaysians should avoid the place for now," Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak was quoted as saying by the Bernama news agency.

Southern Thailand is a popular destination for tourism and shopping for Malaysians living near the border between the two countries.

Revenge attacks

Muslim separatists in the area have vowed to carry out revenge attacks after the deaths of 85 protesters Monday, most of whom suffocated after being crammed into military trucks.

Najib, who is also defence minister, said Malaysia would work with Thailand to bring economic growth to the region despite the latest violence.

"Joint development plans will continue because our aim is to cooperate with the Thai government to contribute to prosperity and security in southern Thailand," he said.

Mainly Muslim Malaysia has pledged to help Thailand develop the troubled south in the hope that economic prosperity will bring peace to the region.
