RMN officer charged with receiving RM19k watch

A senior officer of the Royal Malaysia Navy (RMN) was charged in the Sessions Court here today with accepting a RM19,000 watch in connection with a supply deal to RMN.

Lieutenant Commander Khairul Izwan Mohd Khir, 37, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge before judge Rosbiahanin Arifin.

Khairul Izwan, the Material Control Officer 2, at the RMN Supply Depot in Lumut, was charged with receiving the Bell & Ross watch from a contractor, who was known to have connection with his official function.

The offence was allegedly committed at a shopping centre in Bukit Bintang on May 24, 2013.

He was charged under Section 165 of the Penal Code which provided a maximum jail sentence for two years or fine or both, if found guilty.

Deputy public prosecutor Aida Addha Abu Bakar, from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) offered bail at RM10,000 in one surety and requested the case to be transferred to the Ipoh Sessions Court for hearing with another case involving the accused.

Lawyer Norhasham Hasan, representing Khairul Izwan, requested for bail at RM4,000 on grounds that his client had given his cooperation in the investigation of the case by MACC.

Rosbiahanin then set bail at RM5,000 in one surety and ordered the case to be transferred to the Ipoh Sessions Court for hearing.

The court set Oct 9 for mention of the case at the Ipoh Sessions Court.

Last Sept 9, Khairul Izwan pleaded not guilty in the Ipoh Sessions Court to five counts of receiving cash and a debit card, totalling RM1.5 million.
