Police have identified those involved in the torching of effigies of Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and his father, DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang, on Sunday in Kelantan.

Speaking to Malaysiakini , inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar (photo) said police are now tracing the suspects' whereabouts.

He added the case is being investigated under Section 505 (b) of the Penal Code.

“We would question all those involved,” he said, adding this would include Kota Baru Umno division chief Fatmi Che Salleh as well.

“Those involved should come forward to facilitate police investigations,” he urged.

In a video clip of the incident uploaded onto YouTube, Fatmi was heard urging Umno members to participate in the Sept 16 rally.

Fatmi also criticised Guan Eng and Kit Siang as well as the organisers of the Bersih 4 rally, whom he accused of wanting to divide the Malays.

"Burning their effigies (which were clad in yellow Bersih t-shirts) is a symbol of our protest. We are against everything about Bersih which are just lies,” he had allegedly said.

Apart from torching the effigies, Kota Baru Umno division members also set up a mock altar with photographs of the two DAP leaders, complete with joss sticks and fruit offerings to symbolise the Chinese custom of worshipping ancestors.

A slew of police reports have been lodged over the incident.

'Don't cross the line'

Meanwhile, Khalid cautioned all quarters against indulging in activities or speeches that are provocative and could cause tension.

Similarly, he reminded participants of tomorrow’s gathering not to cross the line as well.

“As I have said before, a large number of police personnel will be deployed to maintain peace and order.

“We will not hesitate to act against anyone who fails to adhere to the law,” he said.
