Spad: Public attitude hampers ops against private taxis
Operations to eliminate private taxis are hampered as there is demand from the public for the service, said Land Public Transport Commission (Spad) department head Che Hasni Che Ahmad.
Citing Johor Baru, he said the service was easily available, including in Mersing.
“The private taxi operators not only drive Perodua Myvi, but also BMW and Mercedes Benz cars, and the service is also available at tourist destinations, ” he told a media conference after an operation against private taxi operators in Johor Baru last night.
He said the high fares charged by the private taxi operators did not deter the public from using their service.
Since October last year, Spad had recorded 450 cases of owners of private vehicles offering transport service without a permit in the peninsula.
Che Hasni said it is an offence under the Land Public Transport Act for a person to operate or provide public transport service without a licence.
The offence carries a fine of up to RM10,000 or one year jail or both, if found guilty.
