Isma: Liberalism, Islam compatible only under Islamic system
Liberalism and Islam are compatible with each other only if liberalism can operate under an Islamic system, according to Ikatan Muslimin Malaysia (Isma) president Abdullah Zaik.
He argued that while Western thinkers often think of faith as a person’s spiritual affairs, Islam is an all-encompassing way of life including, politics, economics and social affairs.

He argued that while Western thinkers often think of faith as a person’s spiritual affairs, Islam is an all-encompassing way of life including, politics, economics and social affairs.
“So if you ask me if liberalism is compatible with faith (when it comes to Islam), liberalism is only compatible if liberalism can operate under an Islamic system.
“But if liberalism also defines or reforms Islam according to the demand and principles of liberalism, then that may not be acceptable to Islam.

He was speaking at a conference on liberalism organised by the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affiars (Ideas), during a discussion on whether the ideology and faith can go hand-in-hand.
