Single stream schools where all students can learn mother tongue languages of their choosing would be the ideal set up, said Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin.

However, he said the country’s founding fathers decided there should be vernacular schools, and they are here to stay.

"If we want to change to single stream schools we need to get all parties to agree on it," he said in a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

The need for single stream schools was one of the motions debated in the Youth Parliament yesterday.

Addressing the young MPs at the end of their third session in 2015 today, Khairy said the motion will be discussed further in the Dewan Rakyat, cabinet and the Education Ministry.

The Umno Youth chief also announced that Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Paul Low will be selecting one of the Youth MPs to be part of his Consultative Committee on Political Funding.

The chosen Youth MP will assist in the formulation of a working paper to legislate political funding.

Besides single stream schools and political funding, the Youth MPs also debated on the need to improve English education in rural areas, and the need for legislation on e-cigarettes.

There are currently 125 Youth MPs, aged between 18 and 30, who are elected online.

Earlier, Malay rights pressure group Perkasa urged the government to implement single stream schools for the sake of unity.
