UiTM defers lectures in S’gor campuses tomorrow over haze

Lectures at all Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) branch campuses in Selangor tomorrow will be postponed because of the very unhealthy air quality due to the haze today.

UiTM vice-chancellor Prof Dr Sahol Hamid Abu Bakar said the postponement of lectures which had been scheduled for the subsequent days would depend on the haze condition.

The postponement will be announced a day before the scheduled lectures, he added.

However, he said the postponement only involved lectures for students as the staff were still required to come to work as usual.

"For campuses in other states, it depends on the Air Pollutant Index (API) in their respective areas and on the discretion of the rector," he said in a statement in Shah Alam today.

According to the Department of Environment's (DOE) portal, three areas recorded very unhealthy API as at 2 pm today, from five at 11am.

Shah Alam recorded the highest API at 239, followed by Batu Muda, KualaLumpur (228) and Port Klang (215).

Meanwhile, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Kuala Lumpur (UTMKL) has postponed all classes at the city campus due to the haze.

The UTMKL Management Team in a Facebook posting today, said the decision was made after the API reading in the Federal Territory exceeded 200, which indicated very unhealthy air.

It said classes would resume to normal on Sept 29.

The university management team advised staff and students of UTM to observe precautions issued by the DOE with regard to the haze situation, as well as stay alert for any upcoming announcements.
