MCA secretary-general Ong Ka Chuan said BN component parties should not trade barbs openly as it would not do the ruling coalition any good.

"We are a coalition, we cannot be quarrelling among each other. What benefits do we get? The exchange of words will only weaken the strength of BN.

"If there is any problem, let us resolve at our platform rather than exchange views in the public," he said in a press conference.

Ong was responding in general when asked about Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin's ( photo ) ultimatum to Pasir Gudang MCA Youth to retract its decision to cut ties with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Failing which, the youth and sports minister warned, BN Youth would cut ties with Pasir Gudang MCA Youth.

Trading barbs openly will only make matters worse especially when the leaders and parties would be seen as cowards if they were to retract the words they had uttered, Ong said.

"When we openly exchange words, it will be a situation where you cannot retract what you have said," he said.

"This is because, if you retract (your words), you are a coward. So, you have to be very brave. But what can you achieve for BN?" said the international trade and industry minister II.

“It is easy to be a hero, but not easy to put the matter to rest. So I urge all leaders not to bash each other in public," he said, adding he was speaking in general and the message was also meant for MCA leaders.

Pasir Gudang MCA Youth had decided to cut ties with Najib when he praised the Sept 16 rally, as a peaceful rally carried without provocation, although it was marred with racist elements .

Ong also dismissed Khairy's call, claiming the matter had been resolved.
