Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has denied sending out a tweet calling for those who do not agree with the ban on mosque loudspeakers, except for azan prayers, to leave the state.

Lim said a police report will be lodged over the fake tweet today, asking the force and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission to speedily act upon the matter.

He expressed hope that members of the public would not believe the lies that he was responsible for the fake tweet.

Lim added that the tweet was sent by certain quarters to tarnish the state government and distract the people from the many alleged financial scandals plaguing the country.

"I have never issued such a statement, nor have I intervened in the Muslim affairs of the state," Lim said at a press conference today.

"The decision to allow mosques' loudspeakers for only azan prayers was made by the Penang Mufti Department, the Penang Islamic Affairs Council and the Penang Islamic Affairs Department.

"To link me to such a thing is malicious and slanderous," added Lim, who is also DAP secretary-general.

Never marginalised any community

He said Penang has never marginalised any community, even if there were those who supported Umno or other BN component parties.

State allocations are channelled to all Penangites, regardless of political affiliation.

At the press conference, Lim was accompanied by Parti Amanah Negara president Mohamad Sabu ( photo ).

Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, defended Lim, saying he could not have interfered in the decision to ban the loudspeakers as he is not a Muslim.

"It is all a malicious lie because he is a Chinese, from DAP and he is Guan Eng," said the former PAS deputy president.

"Such lies are easy and cheap and the public quickly buys them," Mat Sabu said.
