The government should register social media accounts and social media portal owners of every individual so that they can be held responsible for what they post on the Internet, said Umno Youth executive comittee member Nazir Hussin Akhtar Husin.
He said the aim is to stop the dissemination of slander via social sites, which have currently gone overboard.
"The government need not control social media but it should instead register each social media account from individuals and social media groups so that they obtain the actual source as well as being held responsible for what they copy and paste.
"Besides that, we will continue to educate the people and campaign against social media slander," he told reporters after presenting prizes to the winners of a lucky draw in conjunction with the 2015 Malaysia Day Cycling Event in Kuala Lumpur today.
Nazir Hussin said in conjunction with the programme organised by Umno Youth, a #tolakfitnahmediasosial (reject social media slander) and #sayasayangmalaysia (I love Malaysia) campaign also received the participation of more than 7,000 people.
