Suhakam: Set up panel to review annual reports

The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has urged the government to establish a special parliamentary committee to look into all its annual reports on human rights submitted to Parliament over the years.

Suhakam vice-chairperson Khaw Lake Tee said it proposed the matter after it found that the annual reports had yet to be discussed at the Dewan Rakyat or Dewan Negara.

“It is mandatory that these annual reports be submitted to Parliament each year during its first term sitting... however, the issues or problems reported were never debated.

“Through this committee, we hope that all the issues in these annual reports are reviewed and then MPs (members of parliament) could maybe, take them to Parliament. Otherwise, they will merely be reports,” she told a press conference in Malacca today.

She said this after attending the ‘Suhakam with the Communities’ roadshow in Malacca, which was also attended by Suhakam commissioner James Nayagam.

Meanwhile, Nayagam said Suhakam constantly worked with various government agencies, including the immigration department, police and the prisons department to promote and provide exposure to human rights issues.
