Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali has suggested that Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos hold a solat taubat (prayer of repentance) instead of a rally this Sunday.

Azmin said this in response to Jamal who plans to hold a rally dubbed 'Selamatkan Negeri Selangor daripada Kerajaan Pakatan Cacamarba' (Save Selangor from haphazard Pakatan government) which will be held in Ampang this Sunday.

“It is better that they gather in a mosque. I suggest that they perform qiamullail (late night prayer), solat hajat (special prayers), and repent,” he said.

In an immediate response, Jamal told Malaysiakini that it is Azmin who should repent.

"I thank the menteri besar, but it is he who should apologise and repent for hurting his mother's feelings in the past," Jamal said.

He was referring to a TV3 interview with Azmin's mother Che Tom Yahaya in 2012 in which she claimed Azmin had severed ties with her.

The two appear to have let bygones be bygones and Azmin had sought his mother's blessing when he became menteri besar last year.

Soon after the rally, he announced that another large-scale rally would be held in Kajang soon after being released from being detained by the police.

His detention was the result of his claim that a riot would occur in Petaling Street the week after the Sept 16 rally.

Kajang plan cancelled

Jamal had said that the rally in Kajang was necessary because Kajang state assemblyperson Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail had not fulfilled promises made during the last Kajang by-election campaign.

The Umno man, however, has cancelled his Kajang plans and now targets the Selangor administration led by Azmin instead.

Jamal had said that one of the reasons for the rally in Ampang was due to the dengue issue in the state.

He said rallying against Shah Alam is not a crime and chastised Azmin for not accepting criticism.

"This is Pakatan. When we blame them or ask them to be responsible towards Selangor people, they will twist the statement.

"They will never accept reality or (opposing) views," he said.

Jamal also chided Azmin for abandoning his gung-ho terjah activities when he first became menteri besar.

"He used to jump into drains to inspect them. But now he is the biggest mosquito farmer in Selangor," he quipped.
