About 15 percent of Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) customers in the Central Region namely Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya, as well as Labuan have not paid their sewerage bills this year.

IWK central region manager, Ir Mohd Taufik Salleh said the remaining 85 percent have settled their sewerage bills, a dramatic jump compared to when the company was set up in 1994.

The central region has about 1.8 million customer accounts while the whole country has 3.8 million customers.

“The awareness and information campaign on the roles of IWK as well as the important job we have done for the environment have contributed much to the success achieved thus far,” he told a press conference after launching a Plant Open Day which was attended by about 300 surrounding residents in Klang today.

Various activities were carried out on the open day, among them were a briefing on the sewerage system, plant visit and IWK service exhibition.

Meanwhile, Mohd Taufik said the introduction of high technology sewerage treatment plants had succeeded in reducing negative perception of the people living near such treatment plants near residential areas.

He said the high technology plant did not emit smelly gases which affected the environment.
