DAP MP seeks bipartisan support to debate toll hike

DAP's Segambut MP Lim Lip Eng has called for bipartisan support to debate the increase in toll rates for 18 highways in Klang Valley.

Lim said he will propose an emergency motion to debate the matter when Parliament convenes on Monday.

"I hope the speaker will allow the motion to be debated.

"I also hope that MPs from both the government and opposition bloc will support the motion based on national interest and the effect it is having on the rakyat regardless of background, race or income level," he said in a statement today.

Lim ( photo ) said he hoped the House will also debate what measures the government can take to avoid future hikes.

He added that he had submitted a notice for the emergency motion to Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia.

On Thursday, toll rates at 18 highways went up as high as 100 percent after the government decided to stop subsidising the fees.

Toll concessionaires are entitled to hike rates over time under lucrative agreements but the government can put off the hikes if it forks out compensation to these companies.
