Pakatan Harapan will abolish toll on the North-South Expressway (Plus) if it takes over Putrajaya.

DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said this is because the highway's construction cost has already been recuperated.

"It doesn't make sense to have tolls now [...] highway maintenance can be done using road tax," he said during a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.

Similarly he questioned why a toll was still needed on the first Penang bridge. He said tolls are only needed for new highways, and should cease once the costs that go into their making are recovered.

"They (the government) is more interested in protecting cronies than the rakyat," Lim ( photo ) said.

Recently, almost all tolled highways in the Klang Valley raised their fares by up to 100 percent.

The hike came after the government stopped paying compensation to the toll concessionaires.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak reasoned that the government will not be able to give as much 1Malaysia People's Aid (BR1M) if they did not cease payments to the concessionaires.
