Deputy Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak will visit Indonesia early next month for talks on illegal immigrants and security in the Malacca Strait, local media reported today.

Najib, accompanied by Home Affairs Minister Azmi Khalid, will meet with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono during his three-day visit and hold talks with Vice-President Yusuf Kalla on Dec 8, the New Straits Times said.

The issues to be discussed include Indonesia's request for an extension to an amnesty for illegal immigrants in Malaysia and a memorandum of understanding for hiring Indonesian maids, Najib was quoted as saying.

The memorandum was shelved earlier this month due to disputes over details.

Najib, who is also Defence Minister, said he would head Malaysia's delegation to the two-day Malaysia-Indonesia General Border Committee meeting beginning Dec 9.

The meeting would discuss military and non-military cooperation, especially surveillance in the Malacca Strait, a busy waterway which runs between the two countries.

"We will discuss better coordination of patrols along the straits so that the international community will be confident of our ability to promote the safety of one of the most strategic routes in the world," Najib said.
