PARLIAMENT Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB) has spent RM76.5 million to repair defects at the KL International Airport 2 (KLIA2) since its operation on May 2014.

This was revealed by Transport Minister Liow Tiong Lai in a written reply yesterday.

He was responding to questions by Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (Amanah-Sepang), who asked for the repair cost as of last month, and the audit work carried out.

The airport faced ponding - or collection of water - at its aircraft parking area due to ineffective soil treatment in earlier stages of construction, the ministry explained earlier this year.

The water sparked safety fears, with leading budget carrier AirAsia claiming the airport was ' sinking '.

The carrier said the ponding and cracks do not affect take-offs and landing, but urged the government to fix them before they do.

In his reply yesterday, Liow said the independent audit committee, which was set up in January to probe safety issues surrounding KLIA2, would table its final audit report by end of the month.

The problems included flood waters in the runway, and cracks at the terminal building.

Another special task force, which audits the airport's construction and development, will need six months to draft a detailed report, said Liow (BN-Bentong).

At a press conference later, Johari Abdul (PKR-Sungai Petani) said Pakatan Harapan would lodge a report with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission regarding the safety of the airport.

"I am worried. Imagine (if one of the plane’s tyres) were to get stuck when the aircraft lands," he said.

Sim Tong Him (DAP-Kota Melaka) urged the government to reveal the overall repair costs for the airport.
