BN Backbenchers Council chairperson Shahrir Abdul Samad is confident that there are enough government MPs to ensure the opposition's bid to defeat Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's Budget 2016 will not succeed.

This is amid calls for the opposition to vote down Najib's budget as an alternative to a vote of no-confidence against the premier.

"I think this is a game. We still have (the numbers), I'm confident." he told journalists at the Parliament lobby.

Shahrir conceded that some government MPs may not support the budget but stressed that they are "few" and are more likely not to turn up than vote against it.

"I don't think any MPs will cross over the floor.

"Maybe there will be some who stay away from voting the budget," he said.

Shahrir added that there would be serious implications for the country if the budget did not get through.

As such, he believed that BN MPs will not risk the country's interest for a political "game".

'Don't pre-judge 1MDB issue'

Najib is facing calls to step down over his handling of 1MDB, which is struggling to repay its US$11 billion debt amid claims of misappropriation.

The premier is also faced with a scandal over the discovery of RM2.6 billion in his personal bank accounts.

He had denied taking public funds for personal gain while his supporters claimed the money was a "political donation".

Shahrir said MPs should allow the 1MDB investigation to be completed before passing judgement.

"To vote for a no-confidence motion (now), you are pre-judging the issue even before you know the results of the investigation," he said.

The opposition has already submitted a motion of no-confidence against Najib but it remains unclear if Dewan Rakyat speaker Pandikar Amin Mulia will allow a vote on it.
