Jailed former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo’s 'Dato’ Seri' title has been revoked by the Selangor palace.

Selangor state secretary Mohammed Khusrin Munawi said the title, awarded in 2001, was revoked effective Sept 30.

This follows the Federal Court finding Khir guilty of graft and slapping him with a one-year prison sentence on Sept 28.

“As he was found guilty and was punished for the offence, he is no longer worthy and suited to hold this title.

“Therefore, he is forbidden from using the title and all quarters are forbidden from referring to him using the title as it has been revoked,” Khusrin said in a statement today.

Quoting Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah ( left in photo ), Khusrin said the ruler viewed the reputation of title recipients seriously.

“Recipients of a title should not be involved in any crime or wrongdoing to safeguard the dignity of the title.”

The sultan also advised all civil servants as well as corporate leaders to not get involved in abuse of powers or be involved in corruption, Khusrin added.

Temporarily surrendered

“The sultan reminded all relevant quarters that strict action will be taken against all civil servants and leaders who are involved in abuse of powers to stem corruption.”

Khir had in 2011 temporarily surrendered his ‘Dato Seri’ title in view of his then ongoing graft trial.

The dentist had said that temporarily surrendering the title was to avoid tainting and embarrassing the honorific title during the course of his trial.

Khir, who was Selangor menteri besar from 2000 to 2008, was found guilty last month of receiving for himself, while in office, two plots of land in Shah Alam valued at RM3.5 million from the director of a private company.
