Local Chinese education movement Dong Jiao Zong has completed a memorandum on mother tongue education which it insists on handing to Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

"The memorandum was ready before the general election (in March) but we would like to submit it to Pak Lah only if we (get to) meet him.

"This is to show our sincerity and that we are not extremists as accused by the former premier (Dr Mahathir Mohamad)," said its executive officer Bock Tai Hee when contacted.

He said the main focus of the memorandum is to urge the government to recognise the contribution of mother-tongue education.

"By recognising the contribution and status of mother tongue education, we hope the Education Act will be amended (to suit this purpose)," he added.

He said the memorandum has also raised "some old problems" such as the shortage of Chinese primary schools, the unrecognised status of the unified examination certificate , the teaching of Maths and Science in English and the autonomy of the board of directors in Chinese schools.

"The government should treat mother tongue education fairly, regardless of what language is used," he said.

Bock said the movement has many several requests to the premier's secretary for a meeting with Abdullah but has yet to receive a response.

Asked if the movement will seek MCA's help to arrange the meeting, he replied that Dong Jiao Zong should do this on its own.
