Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (Amanah-Sepang) today condemned the police for harassing him for initiating a sedition probe against him over his remark against attorney-general (AG) Mohamed Apandi Ali.

Hanipa, who is being probed over a Malaysiakini report entitled 'Don't be a 'yes man', Amanah MP tells AG', confirmed that the police have summoned him for his statement to be recorded on Friday.

Hanipah said he would defend his right as an MP to question the AG, he said.

"For God's sake, he is a public officer and should be open to public scrutiny," he said.

"The opposition MPs can be easily harassed with this draconian law," he added.

The cops decided to probe Hanipa under the Sedition Act 1948 after they spotted the news article which was picked up by others news portals as well.

'A gentle reminder'

At a press conference at the Parliament lobby last Tuesday, Hanipa and a few opposition MPs had voiced out on the treatment meted out by the authorities on activist and PSM member Khalid Mohd Ismath (photo) .

According to Hanipa, Apandi was the one who had directed the deputy public prosecutor to request the court to deny bail for the activist.

"The court normally allows bail in a criminal prosecution unless the AG says otherwise," Hanipa was reported as saying.

He said it was 'nonsense' to deny bail which he described as a fundamental right of the accused.

Explaining today, he said his words only served as gentle reminder to the newly-minted attorney-general.
