Umno supreme council member Nazri Abdul Aziz misunderstood PAS when the Islamist party said it was willing to work with BN, said PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament lobby today, he said it was not a political collaboration.

"He (Nazri) misinterpreted. PAS doesn't want political cooperation or to contest together (in elections). We will work together on issue-by-issue basis.

"Anything that is good for the people we will cooperate, we give our views," Takiyuddin ( photo ) said.

Nazri said yesterday that an Umno-PAS coalition would not work because they would fight over seats in the general elections.

He said this when asked to respond to Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Tajuddin Abdul Rahman, who raised the possibility of an Umno-PAS coalition.

Tajuddin said this would pose a serious threat to the opposition coalition Pakatan Harapan.

Previously, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang had said that the party was open to cooperating with Umno but had dismissed the possibility of a political coalition.

Takiyuddin, who reaffirmed this stand, insisted that PAS would remain part of the opposition and would even work with DAP on matters of mutual interest.

"We remain the opposition unless BN becomes the opposition," he said.
