The Selangor opposition has likened the budget tabled by state Menteri Besar Azmin Ali today to a "lollipop".

Umno's Batang Kali state assemblyperson Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan said the goodies handed out may come at the expense of the state's future.

"I see the budget this time appears to be like a lollipop budget in the sense that the goodies given today will be detrimental to the future," he told journalists when met at the Selangor state assembly lobby.

Azmin today tabled a RM2.88 billion deficit budget, the largest in the state's history.

He also boosted development expenditure to match operations expenditure at 50 percent respectively.

Meanwhile, Umno's Permatang state assemblyperson Sulaiman Abdul Razak ( photo ) accused Azmin, who is also Bukit Antarabangsa state assemblyperson, of not giving enough emphasis on rural development.

"I am disappointed that this budget did not focus on the rural regions, as it is these areas that are important in Selangor as they supply food (for the state)," he said.

Sulaiman also took issue with Azmin's announcement in the budget on the construction of affordable homes, questioning if they are actually built in the end.

"The state government can announce many thousands of houses that will be built in the next three years but the issue is, how many are actually built?" he said.

He added that there was too much reliance on the part of the state government on the private sector for affordable housing.

Umno's Dengkil state assemblyperson Mohd Sharif was unhappy that Azmin had introduced a deficit budget.

He insisted that Azmin should table a balanced budget and only table a supplementary budget when there is enough revenue to support increased spending.
