A Selangor DAP delegate has suggested breaking the deadlock over the present ad-hoc PKR-DAP-PAS state government by removing all the Islamic party's representatives from the administration.

Otherwise, DAP should quit the Selangor government, suggested Kajang Baru DAP branch chairperson Chiong Yoke Kong.

“We should give (Selangor Menteri Besar) Azmin Ali time to resolve the current crisis, and evict PAS' representatives and (officials) from the Selangor government.

“The reason is simple. PAS has defied the Pakatan Rakyat common policy framework.

"What is the point of cooperating with them?” he said during the debate at the DAP Selangor convention this afternoon in Petaling Jaya.

Selangor DAP, Chiong said, should not bury their head in facing this deadlock and work to resolved it as soon as possible.

“The best solution is to give Azmin Ali a specific timeframe to resolve. Or else, I think we should quit Selangor state government.”

DAP check and balance to PAS in S'gor

Citing PAS chairperson Hadi Awang for not supporting the vote against Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s budget and offering themselves to advise Umno, Chiong slammed PAS for offers to cooperate with its long-time archenemy.

“Do we still want to cooperate with this kind of party within Selangor government?” he said to cheers from several delegates.

In response, DAP vice chairperson Teng Chang Khim said the party should stay in Shah Alam to check and balance PAS.

“We are pragmatic to implement (Pakatan Rakyat common policy framework), such as the systematic allocation to Chinese, Tamil, and sekolah agama rakyat .

“If we stay in the government and quarrel with PAS, there is no use to implement such policy,” the Selangor senior exco member added.

However, he reminded that PAS-DAP cooperation is confined to the exco meeting room and not beyond that.

DAP will fight with PAS in full force in the coming general election, Teng added.

Facing confidence crisis

Meanwhile, DAP state publicity secretary Ronnie Liu supported Chiong’s opinion, saying that Selangor is facing a confidence crisis.

“If we don’t resolve it quickly, it will weaken our winning chance in the next general elections.”

He said PKR should make a clear stance on whether to choose PAS or DAP as governing partner.

Otherwise, he warned the current ad-hoc coalition in Selangor may repeat the history of the heavy defeat of Semangat 46 in the 1990s.

Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah was defeated in 1988, and left Umno to establish Semangat 46.

The Umno splinter party then formed an alliance with PAS through Angkatan Perpaduan Ummah, while DAP contested the 1990 general election through Gagasan Rakyat.

The two coalitions did not cooperate with each other.

Though Semangat 46 made a breakthrough in Kelantan in the 1990 general elections, it did not grow in strength and was finally dissolved in 1996.

PKR-led Selangor government has a fragile coalition, due to no single party being able to claim a majority in the state assembly; PKR has 13 seats, DAP 15, PAS 13, and Amanah has two.
