MB worries RSGC-public park plan will enrich 'cronies'
Selangor Menteri Besar Azmin Ali says the state government is concerned that the federal proposal to convert the Royal Selangor Golf Club into a public park will enrichen "Umno cronies".
Debating the Budget 2016 in the Dewan Rakyat, Azmin (PKR-Gombak) said converting the exlusive club into a public space will undermine the club's history since 1893.
"This is certainly something Selangor worries about," said Azmin, who is also PKR deputy president.
"Our biggest worry is that a piece of Selangor's heritage will go into the hands of Umno/BN cronies through commercial projectsm" he said.
RSGC is located on Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, and was established before Kuala Lumpur was gazetted into a federal territory in 1974.
Azmin also expressed concern that development on the area could lead to further congestion and cause real estate prices to skyrocket beyond Malaysian means, like the development of the Petronas Twin Towers a stone's throw away.
The Housing, Local Government and Urban Well-being Ministry earlier said it received a proposal to turn the club into a public park .
Its minister Abdul Rahman Dahlan said the matter is being studied and the government is in discussion with the club management.
Abdul Rahman said the area now used by one of Asia's oldest golf club can be developed into a cultural centre for family activity.
