Ferry crewman beaten at Weld Quay terminal

A ferry crewman was injured when he was beaten by a group of men while the Penang ferry was docking at the Raja Tun Uda ferry terminal in Weld Quay in George Town last Wednesday.

In the 9.45pm incident, the 38-year-old man sustained injuries in the face and left rib after he was beaten with a helmet, feet and hands. He was treated as an outpatient.

Timur Laut District Police chief ACP Mior Faridalatrash Wahid said the ferry crewman wanted to open the window of the deck when the ferry was about to dock and there was a group of 11 men there at that time.

“The ferry crewman told them to leave the place as he wanted to close the deck’s window, but he was pushed from behind by the group, who hit him with a helmet,” he said in George Town today.

He said the ferry crewman tried to escape by running to the room of the officer on duty, but the group of men chased and continued to beat him.

Mior Faridalatrash said the incident was witnessed by the public and believed to have been caused by a misunderstanding between the crewman and one of the men.

He said the ferry crew could not identify the men who attacked him and police are asking the public with information on the incident to contact the nearest police station to help in the investigation.
