Bersih 4 - Mahathir cries victimisation

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said the police's decision to go after him for attending the Bersih 4 rally was a case of victimisation.

"To be just, the law must apply to everyone equally.

"To single me out for the offence of attending the illegal rally would be unjust.

"It would be a kind of victimisation. Unless the government wishes to be unjust, it cannot take action against me alone," said Mahathir in a blog posting today.

Mahathir said there were more than 50,000 people at the rally at that time.

"If I did something wrong, then 50,000 people at that rally also did something wrong," he said.

Mahathir raised eyebrows when he turned up at the Bersih 4 rally both on Aug 29 and 30.

The former prime minister, who had often clamped down on protest rallies when he was in power, said he joined the rally as Najib had dismantled all avenues to hold him accountable.

The Bersih rally had called for Najib's resignation over the discovery of RM2.6 billion in his personal bank accounts, which his supporters claim is a ‘political donation’.

The deposits are being investigated by the MACC which has seen its investigators arrested or transferred during the probe.
