Every citizen in the country should practise moderation in all aspects of life, says Communications and Multimedia Minister Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

He said with moderation as a way of life, it would be easier for the plural society in Malaysia to live in peace and harmony which was a top priority for a country like Malaysia, with people of various social and cultural backgrounds.

"Extremism, whatever the goal maybe, is very dangerous and can cause damage and bring harm to the people, as witnessed in Paris," he said at the 2015 Sabah National Month award ceremony here last night.

Also present were state information exco, Sapawi Ahmad, information director, Almain Ajirul and broadcasting director, Ali Ngasio.

Salleh (photo) said the government, through its various agencies would continue to organise various campaigns in educating the public to appreciate peace and harmony as there were people out to disrupt the peace and question the country's democratic system.

He said this group of people not only tried to deny the rights of the elected government to lead the people but also spread false information, distorted images and photographs through the social media in an attempt to interrupt smooth government administration.

According to Salleh, when these distorted information and images were constantly displayed and made viral, the people over time would think they were true.

In this context, Salleh reminded the people to be more careful and evaluate wisely before believing everything which was sent to them.

"That is why, this ministry through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission is serious in regulating all matters under the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998.

"Finally, we must admit that we need to have a sense of accountability in avoiding any form of provocation which may undermine unity, racial, religious, political, economic and social harmony," he said.

At the event, Salleh also presented prizes to winners in the various categories of the competition, related to the spirit of patriotism.
