The military will be deployed to beef up security for the Asean Summit in Kuala Lumpur this weekend, following last Friday's terrorist attacks in Paris, Malaysian Armed Forces chief General Zulkifeli Mohd Zin said today.

"We will work with the police and help them tighten security at the Asean summit to the highest level.

"I have already spoken to the inspector-general of police. Our highest officers are in discussions," Zulkifeli ( photo ) told reporters after a walkabout at the Princess Haliza National Service camp in Sepang today.

Last Friday, gunmen and bombers attacked restaurants, a concert hall and a sports stadium at locations across Paris, killing 127 people in a deadly rampage that French President Francois Hollande said was the work of Islamic State.

Zulkifeli said that the Armed Forces would deploy at least 1,000 military personnel, in Kuala Lumpur specifically, though they would also be scouting the surrounding areas.

Defence Minister Hishamuddin Hussein said the country had to be more cautious after the Paris attacks.

"We have to take into account what has happened in Paris and to make sure that our guests (for the Asean summit) are safe.

"Right now I have not got any information to think otherwise, but we still have to be cautious and take precautions," Hishammuddin told reporters at the same event.

The military will be at the Asean Summit to support PDRM, he added.
