Alvin Tan is a habitual offender when it comes to crossing the lines of religious sensitivity, and his latest posting could be considered the most controversial to date.

It involved an act of defecation and the Quran, which sparked outrage and led to a slew of police reports being filed against the Malaysian blogger who is currently in the United States.

Facebook had also shut down his page as a result of the complaints.

Some claim his antics are an attempt to secure political asylum based on the negative responses and threats his posts attract while there are those who describe him as nothing more than a publicity junkie.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar also believes that he should not be put under the limelight.

The police chief reminded the public not to highlight Tan's every action until it becomes viral and gives the blogger, whom he equated to a primate, the publicity that he wants.

“Let him be. Stop giving this ‘beruk’ (ape) the publicity. The more you give, the more he enjoys it. That is what he wants,” he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani .

At the same function earlier, Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi ordered Khalid to take action against Tan, as the blogger needed to be taught a lesson.

"I asked the Royal Malaysian Police (RMP) to use whatever power there is to bring him (Alvin) to justice.

"Maybe he think he can do whatever he wants abroad. Maybe he can get away with the (Malaysian) law, but ethics must be respected," he said.

Zahid, who is also deputy prime minister, was speaking at the Home Ministry's 2015 Innovation Day.
