Malaysia’s Internet traffic registered an an increase in terms of data amount transfered over the Internet at one time (mega bits per second or Mbps), in the first six months of 2015.

In a statement today, Malaysia Internet Exchange (MyIX) chairperson Chiew Kok Hin said as at end of the second quarter (Q2) 2015, the national Internet traffic rose 60 percent to 98,589 Mbps from 61,771 Mbps in the same period in 2014.

He said the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission’s (MCMC) 2015 Q1 report showed that Malaysia’s household broadband penetration rate was at 70.2 percent.

“In 2009, the household broadband penetration rate was at 31.7 percent and the increase in Internet traffic was due to the growing number of broadband users in Malaysia.

“As of 2014, there is a total of 20.7 million broadband subscribers, with 85 percent comprising mobile broadband subscribers,” Chiew said.

MyIX, a non-profit organisation, is an initiative under the MCMC through the cooperation of local Internet services providers to connect and exchange local Internet traffic.
