The National Unity Action Plan framework is currently being discussed to be tabled before the ‘away day’ cabinet meeting in February next year, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Joseph Kurup.

He said the plan, which is prepared by the National Unity Consultative Council, basically had been approved by the government.

“The plan has been presented in the cabinet meeting and in a meeting with all menteris besar and chief ministers recently.

“The plan is focusing on nine main outcomes and 16 proposals have been outlined to maintain, strengthen and improve the unity among the society in the country,” he told a press conference in Putrajaya today.

Kurup said through the 16 outlined proposals, an action plan will be drawn up by the National Unity and National Integration Department as the agency which is responsible for the unity affairs, so that the plan would be effectively and comprehensively implemented.

“Among the 16 proposals is the recommendation to review the level among the ethnic ties as well as an active involvement between the public and private societies through dialogue, forums and round-table discussion for any matters raised,” he said.

He added it also included the organisation of appropriate programmes, involving all ministries, departments and government agencies and the private sector in improving the unity level in the country.

Kurup also had not ruled out the possibility that there was a need to set up a new legislation that is related to unity.

He said for the future, the National Unity Consultative Council would be restructured with a smaller membership and responsible for monitoring the implementation and evaluating the effectiveness of the plan.
