The call from Sepang Umno grassroots leaders for Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak to resign is just a small issue, Federal Territories Umno Youth chief Mohd Razlan Muhammad Rafii said.

"That is actually an isolated statement. How many divisions do we have in Umno? It's just one division so it's okay," he said at a press conference in Kuala Lumpur today.

On Tuesday, a group of Umno grassroots leaders claiming to represent 20 of the party’s branches in Sepang, called for Najib to resign as prime minister and Umno president.

This was because they saw him as a liability to the party due to the controversies over 1MDB, the RM2.6 billion 'donation' to his personal accounts, and the implementation of GST.

However, Mohd Razlan said there was no need to sensationalise the statements of one division out of 191 Umno divisions nationwide.

"Even if they represent 20 branches out of 20,000 branches, it's not even one percent," he said.

He said Najib still has the full support of the grassroots. From his meetings with other grassroot leaders and members, he added that they have an understanding of the issues.

He wondered if Sepang Umno had been influenced by external factors and outside forces to make such a statement. However, he said it was Sepang Umno's right to voice its opinions.

Spokesperson for the group Rushdan Mohamed had said Umno did not belong to Najib.

“We hope these disconcerting issues can be resolved immediately, before Umno and BN are rejected in the 14th general election.

“Being among the grassroots and among the voters, I can’t see how Umno and BN can be re-elected today.

"So I really hope, and beg Datuk Seri Najib bin Tun Abdul Razak, to resign as prime minister and as Umno president, if you love this grand party. It is time because so much time has already been given to you to resolve all these problems," he had said.
