Heavy monsoon rain is expected to occur in the east coast states of peninsular Malaysia on Wednesday or Thursday lasting three to five days.

Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) director-general Che Gayah Ismail said the occurrence was due to the signs of cold surges that would strike after Wednesday.

“The cold surge is a high pressure cold wind coming from Siberia and China that reaches our area (Malaysia).

“As such, havy rain will occur a day or two after the cold surge as it will take time for the wind to reach our country,” she told Bernama today.

She added that the situation might lead to floods occurring in the affected areas as a result of the heavy rain lasting between three to five days.

“As there is still a long time, that is six to seven days before the forecast occurs, the accuracy of the forecast for the heavy monsoon rain is between 60 to 65 percent,” she said.

Meanwhile, MetMalaysia said in a statement in its portal that the moist weather that occurred currently, was expected to persist with rain falling in one or two areas in the east coast states of peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and east Sabah in the early morning.

In the evening and night, rain and thunder storms were expected to occur in several areas in the east coast states of peninsular Malaysia, the interior of Pahang, Sarawak and the western part of Sabah, said the statement.
