Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar should consider updating his knowledge on the Penal Code, lawyer Syahredzan Johan says.

Syahredzan said this in reference to Khalid’s statement that PKR’s Lembah Pantai MP Nurul Izzah Anwar may have committed treason by meeting an enemy of the state.

The IGP said Nurul Izzah could be investigated under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) and Section 124 of the Penal Code on her meeting with Jacel H Kiram, the daughter of former Sulu armed group head, Jamalul Kiram III.

Syahredzan ( photo ) countered this stand of Khalid, saying a check on the Penal Code will reveal that Section 124 is not on treason but it is the offence of assaulting a Member of Parliament.

“In fact, there is no such offence of 'treason'. Maybe the IGP needs to update his Penal Code?” the Bar Council member said on his Facebook posting last night.

Khalid also said last Sunday that police would call in Nurul Izzah for further clarification on her meeting with Jacel.

The PKR vice-president was forced to explain her meeting with Jacel after a photograph of the duo having dinner was uploaded by Jacel on her Facebook page.

The Lembah Pantai MP said she was in the Philippines on Nov 9 as part of a PKR delegation to meet various stakeholders there.

The delegation was hosted by the Council on Philippine Affairs and the Asian Institute for Democracy, the Office of the City Mayor of Manila and the Office of the Vice-President of the Philippines.

Nurul Izzah has since expressed her regret over the photograph after sustaining brickbats from various BN leaders who accused her of having threatened the country’s sovereignty by meeting Jacel.
