Delegates attending the Umno general assembly next month will not be prevented from debating issues concerning 1MDB and the RM2.6 billion political donation, said party vice-president Hishammuddin Hussein.

"It's already debated in Parliament, discussed on blogs and social media.

“So what restrictions are there?" he told reporters after officiating at the closing ceremony of the Convention on the Empowerment of the Muslim Agenda in Kuala Lumpur today.

Hishammuddin said debates during the general assembly are based on motions put forth from the divisions and branches.

"Our debates are based on motions from the party branches and divisions.

"If you want to debate other issues, there are plenty of other channels," he said.

He added that they also have other issues on their agenda such as the future of the Malays and Islam in the country.

On a separate matter, he said the Islamic State (IS) terrorists and various other Islamic extremist groups have hijacked the "true face" of Islam by doing "evil" things.

However, he is relieved that despite threats of attacks on the Asean summit last week, no such thing happened.

"That gives me hope that Malaysia and Umno are the true face of Islam. Umno has to articulate the true Islam," he said.
