Vape traders in Muar given 1 month to clear out stock

Vape traders in Muar have until Jan 1 to clear their stock before sale of vape products are banned by the Muar Municipal Council (MMC).

President Jamaludin Hamid said the council will issue a notice on this with a warning that errant traders will be fined and their business licences revoked.

“A fine of up to RM2,000 can be imposed and their goods seized. They have until the deadline to sell their existing stock or find an alternative way of clearing it,” he said in a statement today.

He added that the ban will be enforced under a by-law associated with business trade, industry and professions.

Yesterday, the Johor government announced it would issue a new circular soon banning the sale of vapes through the by-laws of the local councils.

The move follows the order by the Sultan of Johor Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar recently that vape products be banned in the state, effective Jan 1.

Jamaluddin said once the ban is imposed, MMC will work with the district pharmacy and health departments to raid and seize vape products under the Poisons Act 1952.

He said at present, vape traders in the district utilised their licences for convenience goods, and hopes that vape sellers would abide by the new ruling.

He said the MMC could get a court order to close down premises whose operators did not abide by the ruling.
